With the recent outbreak of ransomware attacks, I wanted to address a couple of things I see a lot of in the small office and home office space. That is, relying on cloud based file sync utilities and/or USB drives with backup software as a way of backing up important data.
This strategy is problematic as it leaves even the backups at risk of being encrypted by the ransomware. If your USB drive is accessible from your computer when the ransomware launches, even the backup files on that drive will be encrypted, and they will be useless. Most consumer level file sharing services are also not safe from ransomware as they act as a folder on your device, and the files are readily accessible by the ransomware. Once these files are encrypted, they can still sync to your cloud share and your other devices as long as the infected system is still connected to the internet. Once your files in the cloud share are infected, most services don't give you an easy way to recover. Anchor/eFolder works a little differently. It not only has a backup utility, it also has a version control feature which will allow you to recover file versions from prior to an attack and push them out to your other systems or user groups. Here's a knowledge base article on how that would work: Click Here
